Animals kept the No. 1 position on Netflix’s English-language film list for a second week, drawing 30.8 million views according to the platform’s October 20 Top 10 report. The thriller, directed and co-written by Ben Affleck, begins with a mayoral candidate whose child is abducted. The crisis pulls the candidate and his wife into a web of deception and forces them to face secrets that could undo the life they built.
A family crisis inside a political campaign
Mark, played by Affleck, is campaigning for mayor when his son is taken. Kerry Washington plays Abigail, his wife. The story places the family’s private emergency beside a public campaign, where every move is watched and every decision can become a message. That pressure gives the title more than one meaning. The film asks what people become when fear takes over and the rules they live by stop feeling useful.
Netflix’s weekly viewing figure indicates strong audience attention, but popularity is only a starting point for a conversation about the film. The platform’s view count uses its own methodology and should be read as a streaming metric, not as a cinema ticket total. Still, a second week at the top suggests viewers are recommending the story to one another and staying with its tense premise.
Why thrillers travel
Kidnapping plots create immediate stakes, but the most durable thrillers make the characters matter beyond the chase. Animals draws on ambition, marriage and the compromises that public life can demand. The family’s secrets are not separate from the campaign. They are part of the pressure building around it.
The film’s success also reflects how quickly a streaming release can become a shared event. Viewers in different countries can watch the same title in the same week, and a ranked chart can make that attention visible. The risk is that a number replaces discussion. A stronger response asks what the film says about power, family and the stories people tell when their public image is in danger.
Animals has found a large audience, but the deeper test is what viewers remember after the suspense fades. Its best possibility is not simply another twist. It is the uneasy recognition that every family has a public version and a private one, and a crisis can make the distance between them impossible to hide.
